The Covid19 Pandemic has had a devastating impact on the global economy. That just is a fact of life. To pretend otherwise is to put blinkers on whilst running a race- not recommended. Depressing right? Hell NO! Just because the effect on the global economy has been devastating, this does not mean that YOU need to be devastated! You are still a person. You still have SO MUCH WORTH inside of you. You still have the ability to make your own choices and strategic moves, in your business and in your life. You have the ability to build empires inside of you. We just need to unleash it.
Do not ever underestimate the power of being authentically you! In fact, it is often in times of crises, like these, that we are forced to remind ourselves and each other of our true selves and our true worth. True resilience shines brightest in the fiery light of adversity. We will often not understand how strong we really are, before we have to be. That said, I’m an accountant, in fact I’m a Chartered Accountant - I need economic figures and real data to back this theory up. So do I have that? Yes, I do!
In our current economic climate I’ve spotted what I’m calling “the cheese migration” and yes, this is a poorly disguised reference to the brilliant book written by that expert guy who wrote “Who moved my cheese?”. In his book, “Who moved my cheese?”, Dr. Spencer Johnson’s message is clear. No source of cheese lasts forever. Life changes, whether we like it or not. Change is inevitable. Anticipate it, adapt to it, learn to embrace it and enjoy it. Do so and you won’t just suffer less stress and unhappiness, you’ll enjoy more success and fulfilment in every part of your life, including, but not limited to your entrepreneurial ventures.
This is exactly what is happening in the post-corona economy. Large industries have shifted, virtually overnight. Some, previously ‘normal’ industries, such as the entertainment, knowledge and self-sustainability industries, have literally exploded into million dollar opportunities overnight. Other previously million dollar industries, like the tourism industry, have virtually disappeared almost overnight. Entrepreneurs are finding themselves in a post-corona economy, where they experience having to deal and come to terms with either an explosion of work and unprecedented, almost desperate, growth, or waking up to a desolate almost desert-like organisation, where before there were savannah’s of opportunity. Neither situation is ideal. and it is up to each and every single individual entrepreneur to know that, accept that and realise that NOW is the time for making key strategic moves.
It’s like playing chess. You were always the chess master, it's just that the game was progressing at a gradual ‘normal’ pace, where now the game has changed completely overnight and you probably find yourself about 16 moves behind… It’s not ideal, but its reality. The cheese hasn’t disappeared. it has just moved. The sooner we entrepreneurs realise this, the more we put ourselves back in a position of power within our own organisations so that we can assess, plan, predict and make our own key strategic moves. It’s a scary time to live in. What I need you to realise is that it always has been. Nothing has changed with regards to what it takes to be an entrepreneur. It’s just that you are now required to play in a different landscape. Don’t fret. This is not the time to doubt yourself. You can do it. You’ve always done it.
This is where Natalie Joel, certified Keto Coach, ProTech Mentor and Expert Coach on our Fempreneur Course, shines as a business coach. According to Natalie now is the time to really get back to your roots, remember your worth, as a business owner and as a basic human being and actively make the changes you need to make in your lifestyle in order to take care of that worth. “We need to stop thinking lifestyle change is hard! Everything in life is hard! You did not get to be a top fempreneur by life being easy! You had to go out and get it!!!! But I am sure you feel it is sooo worth it! Well, in your private life, YOU are so worth it too! If you feel you are worth it, you will find it will flow into your business life as well,” says Natalie Joel.
So, what does this have to do with being a successful entrepreneur in a post-corona economy you may ask? And the answer, according to Natalie Joel, is EVERYTHING! “Responses to how we do things if we are physically run down will be quite different to how we respond if we are energised, if because of the way you eat, your blood sugar is low, you are going to respond quite differently than if you ate in a different way that allows your body to be more healthy,” explains Natalie Joel. Now is the time to dig deep and really take care of yourself first so that you can take care of your business later.
Your business deserves to have you by its side, actively working for and towards its success and you can only do that when you are functioning at your utmost best. Natalie Joel further explains that “What state you are in depends on what type of state you already know. Unfortunately for many of us we only know the negativity in certain states, for example in a state of rage or anger many of us can become abusive and really nasty and we need to learn how to behave differently in the different ways of state. So, understanding how to direct our state is understanding how to get the best out of ourselves at any time, and then to master our states which will then master our bodies.”
One way that Natalie suggests we entrepreneurs do this is by actively creating and recognising the importance of anchors in our lives. An anchor, in simple terms, is a pleasant memory, event or feeling that is cognitively attached to something tangible, such as music, a letter, reminder or memento. When you find yourself moving into a negative state of being, you should allow yourself time with one of your “anchors”. This will assist you in recalling and shifting into a more pleasant state of being.” Ultimately, it just takes practice, but once you’ve learnt this skill, it can be used over and over again, with great effect on both your personal life and the success of your entrepreneurial ventures.
“This is not the time to be spending time with negative or toxic individuals if it can be helped,” advises Natalie Joel. “By actively making the choice to live in a healthy state of being, and align with individuals who’ve chosen the same, we can get so much more out of ourselves and out of others. Stress is a big factor in our lives... one that can seep into every aspect of our private and business lives. We need to get motivated to make lasting changes to feel better about ourselves. It is so important that we find the time for ourselves to build healthy habits and find the correct state we want our minds and therefore our bodies to be in. By decreasing our stress, we will increase our energy levels and improve our sleeping patterns. Therefore, if you do have people in your life that contribute to maximising your ‘stress-load’ in a day - minimise your time spent with them to the best of your ability and actively recognise and seek the value of healthy connections in your life right now.”
“And leave the donuts and other sugary treats in the pre-corona world,” advises Natalie. “You do not need sugar in order to get through your workday, finish off that audit, or attack that new client quote. Sugar is a short-term solution in a world that requires long-term solutions built on grit, determination and self-care, not quick fixes aimed at destroying your health! By having sugar today, you are guaranteeing that you’ll be craving sugar tomorrow and before you know it you’ll be desperately running around looking for your next quick fix, instead of looking for your next big client! It’s an addiction. Remember, how we feel translates to how we act, which leads into how we can boost production as entrepreneurs! By cutting the sugar, we cut the cravings and thus the desire to keep eating! By not worrying about food all the time we can focus more on maximising productivity.”
And if I feel that; yes this is great information and so valuable, but I have no clue where to start? Don’t fret! You can start making healthy changes to your lifestyle aimed at allowing yourself to achieve your true purpose in life quite easily and with minimal effort. In fact, Natalie Joel advises that the best way to start on this journey is to “Take time in the next few days to consciously think about how you are feeling and envelop mindfulness in what you do. You will be amazed at how you will realise that yes, you can be in control of your own destiny... A wonderful idea would be to chart this as well and see how often you slip into negative thought, creating extra stress for yourself, and then see how you can mindfully raise your positivity and bring about increased energy and maximise your productivity and vitality.”
Well I don’t know about you, but I, for one, as an entrepreneur making moves in a post-corona economy myself, cannot wait to start on this journey and see where it takes me. I believe that I will ‘find my cheese’ in the process - once again, because I am an #EconomicWarrior and that is just what we do.
