Step 1 in Achieving Results through Online Speed Networking - Choose your battles...STRATEGICALLY!



When you can describe a problem, most of the time, you’ve already solved it. For this reason, we will use the SMART goal-setting system to clearly define some kick-arse goals guaranteed to ensure you achieve exactly the results your business needs right now through investing your time at your next Online Speed Networking Event. For this reason, let us just quickly touch base, again, on what SMART goals are.


SMART goals are:
Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Relevant
Temporal

And, to be honest, the reason for most of my successes in my endeavours in business.


Specific

Specific means referring to something unique, and is the opposite of general, broad or vague. For example…”Make more profit” - that’s general. “Make more profit by increasing the sales price for this specific product by 1% and decreasing the cost of sales for this specific product by 1% through taking advantage of the bulk buying offer made by supplier X in Month Y whilst maintaining sales levels achieved in Month Z” - Now that’s specific. (And therefore doable!)


Measurable

Measurable means that the success, failure and progress towards a certain goal may be measured objectively through clearly defined measurable variables. For example; “Make more profit” - that’s not measurable. When will you have achieved this goal? No one knows… “Make 2% more gross profit margin on product X with reference to Month Y.” - Now that’s measurable. (By everyone and anyone!)


Attainable

Attainable means doable, achievable and believable and the opposite of useless and purposeless. “Make more profit” - that’s not attainable, because it’s not measurable. “Make 200% more profit.” - that might not be attainable - we won’t know… “Make 2% more gross profit margin on product X with reference to Month Y, in which gross profit margin was increased by 2% from month Z.” - Now that’s attainable. (Your sales team is guaranteed already thinking of what they did in Z and what they’ll do again, or do differently in Month Y to be able to achieve this).


Relevant

Relevant means linked to something that will define your business’s destiny, for example how to conquer new markets, expand your network of stores, the number of customers, billing etc. It is exciting, incredible, fascinating, directly linked to the growth of your business and the opposite of procedure, systems and operational detail. “Make more profit.” Already excites me. Even though the goal is vague, non-measurable and non-attainable, it is directly linked to the funding stream that feeds my business and the ultimate reason of existence for my business (to create value for its shareholders).


Temporal

Temporal means time-based. This type of goal has a beginning and more importantly a deadline by which it is to be achieved. “Make more profit.” does not generate a sense of urgency from the reader. “Make 2% more gross profit by the end of month Y.” - now that’s temporal. (Your sales team have already diarised the date in their shared calender, since it is clearly important!)


Are you inspired yet? I am! In fact, after having written this blog up to this point, I was so inspired that I wrote down my own SMART goals for Explore ProTech for our next Online Speed Networking Event at which I'll be representing Explore ProTech together with our Explore ProTech Team and #ProTechTribe. I've just decided to share these goals with all of you #EconomicWarriors in our Entrepreneurial Community as part of this blog post to illustrate their power, relevance and impact on a business and individual level...So, here are the SMART goals I wrote down and would like to achieve for Explore ProTech through investing my time in attending the 120 minute Online Speed Networking Event coming up on 27 September 2020:


SMART Goal #1: Increase the Explore ProTech Social Media Footprint on Facebook by increasing the Explore ProTech Facebook Page likes by 150 through converting 75% of the attendees at the next Online Speed Networking Event into page likes by the end of day 3 after the Online Speed Networking event (so by 30 September 2020).


Let’s do a quick check to make sure this is a SMART goal:


Is it specific? Oh yes - I know exactly what needs to be achieved


Is it measurable? Oh yes - Anyone will be able to determine objectively if our page likes have increased by 150 likes because of the work done at the event by simply measuring the amount of page likes directly before the event (on 27 September 2020) and again 3 days after the event (on 30 September 2020)


Is it attainable? Oh yes - Converting 75% of attendees in a 4 day period, including facetime at the event itself, is MORE than doable for me specifically. In fact, this is the minimum conversion rate I would expect. I will most likely achieve a much higher conversion rate though.


Is it relevant? Oh yes - Our Explore ProTech Business Baby is in the aggressive growth phase (experienced shortly after starting up) and it is HUNGRY for more exposure to potential clients, customers, collaborators, key suppliers, fans, followers and everyone else. One KEY thing I can do in order to get this exposure for our Explore ProTech Business Baby is to increase the amount of people reached across the globe on social media. Successfully increasing our social media reach, at the moment, will significantly increase the success rates on our email marketing and social media marketing campaigns, resulting in increased traffic to our website, increased reach of our blog posts and a greater awareness of the Explore ProTech brand.


Is it Temporal/ Time-based? Oh yes - I’ve given myself 3 days after the event to wrap-up on post-event contact work, which is more than enough time to get the necessary work done in order to achieve this goal, even taking into account the work already scheduled for me around these dates, but it’s not SO much time that I risk the success of achieving this goal… So after 3 days I would expect my most recent acquaintances to still be able to remember me (as long as I’ve done my job of making a memorable impression before and during the Online Speed Networking Event).


Is it starting to make sense what a SMART goal is, and what an incredibly powerful tool it is to use in business, and specifically with regards to ensuring that you obtain maximum results from the time you’re investing in Online Speed Networking?

I would imagine so, because whilst I am writing this, I’m literally just getting more and more excited about this event and the pure business potential it holds for entrepreneurs like me…


Anyway, I digress… I still wanted to share the two other SMART goals I have chosen for myself with regards to my representation of Explore ProTech at our next Online Speed Networking Event. So, without further ado, here they are:


SMART Goal #2: Increase the Explore ProTech Special Interest Online Speed Networking Email List by 225 email addresses by converting 75% of the attendees at the next Online Speed Networking event into email subscribers AND getting 50% of these subscribers to recommend ONE friend or colleague that will also be interested in signing up for the Explore ProTech Special Interest Online Speed Networking Email List by the end of day 3 after the Online Speed Networking event (so by 30 September 2020).


SMART Goal #3: Gain 150 new leads for Explore ProTech and the Explore ProTech Entrepreneurial Community by profiling 100% of the attendees and creating 4 new Special Interest Email Lists with a laser targeted focus around the interests disclosed by the attendees by the end of day 5 after the Online Speed Networking event (so by 2 October 2020).


I didn’t want to bore you with unnecessary detail about our business strategy (although it does excite me to write about it!) so I didn’t include the SMART analysis discussion around these last 2 goals, but am more than happy to write that up for you so if you’d like to read about it, just let me know in the comments down below then I’ll write an additional blog post with those discussions to encourage further strategic and critical thinking for our readers…
